Journal of Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Kemble, Tuesday August 24, 1773

[F]rom Wickham to Gosport is 9 miles, directly opposite to Portsmouth, which we visited with the Dock Yards which are the finest in the World, was on board the Princess Royal a ninety Gun Ship on the Stocks near Compleat, and to be Launched in two Months, as well as the Britannia, one of the largest Ships in the Navy, moored in the Harbour carrying 120 Guns. We likewise took a View of the Extensive Works carrying on for the defence of the place by land, which are scarcely more to be seen now, but their traces of the designed Work. Gosport is fortified with a Rampart and Ditch, the whole Works on both sides of the Harbour, would require great numbers of men to defend them, supposed not less than 20 Thousand Men at least.
