Journal of Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Kemble, Wednesday August 18, 1773

From Lewes to Brighthelmstone 8 miles, a Pretty Town situated on the Sea with a fine fertile Country round it, many of the Nobility and Gentry resort to it during the Summer Months to drink and bathe in the Sea Water, but it has no buildings or anything else worth remarking. From Brighthelmstone to Bramber is 9 miles, over a high and very extensive down, with the Sea on your left and a rich and pleasant Country on your right, and in front, the whole Affording a most extensive View of the richest nature and very beautiful to the Eye. The downs in this Country feed large Flocks of Sheep. From Bramber to Finelon 6 miles, the like Views and Country but rather exceeding it in height and prospect.
