Journal of Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Kemble, Sunday August 8, 1773

Went by Water from London to Woolwich, past by Greenwich where there is a most Noble Hospital for the Reception of old, Wounded, and Infirm Sailors Discharged from the Navy. At Woolwich is an Artillery Store house where all sorts of Cannon are lodged and a Battalion of Artillery Quartered. An Academy is there founded for the Education of Young Gentlemen who are intended for the Military Life, where fortification, Gunnery &c. is taught in the highest Perfection. Was much pleased with the dry Dock for Building his Majesty's Shipping, several of which were there on the Stocks, one or two 74 Gun Ships and some smaller.
