Journal of Lieutenant Ebenezer Denny, November 1, 1781

Three regiments of Pennsylvania, a detachment of artillery, and Maryland troops, commence their march for South Carolina—General St. Clair, the commanding officer. Easy, regular marching; roads generally good, through sandy country. Pass through Richmond and Guilford, in North Carolina, where General Green and the British had a hard fight; also Camden, where Gates was defeated. Halted at least one day in the week for purpose of washing and refreshing.
